Aided by Billy Keller and Herman Gilliam, Mount and the Boilermakers beat Miami Ohio and Marquette to make the Final Four. After destroying North Carolina, 92 65 in the national semifinals, Purdue came up one victory shy of winning the National Championship, suffering a 92 72 loss at the hands of UCLA.
