The temple is home to the sacred tooth relic. Buddha was cremated, and his left canine was taken by Arahat Khema. It was believed that whoever was in possession of the tooth had the right to the land. The tooth was sought to be destroyed several times, but brought to Kandy, Sri Lanka in a woman's hair ornament.
