Door zijn grillige vormen en aparte stukken is spiderwood uitermate geschikt in combinatie met stenen. Als Spiderwood in het aquarium wordt geplaatst, kunnen schimmels ontstaan die worden veroorzaakt door de bacterin in het hout. Dit resulteert in een olieachtige stof of witte slijmslaag.
