Early 20th Century Brass Ship's Bell betty 1930s Morton Salt store displayAntique ship helm's bell. Pieces such as this were mainly used to help tell time on ships prior to the introduction of electronic alarms. Though, as some are likely aware, each ring doesn't mark an hour. Ship time is used in multiples of 2, up to 8, to mark four hour increments. For example, one bell (one chime) is equivalent to 12: 30, 8: 30, and 4: 30; three bells (one chime plus two simultaneous chimes) was equivalent to 1: 30, 5: 30, and 9: 30.
