Instituted in 1976. Three piece construction, in bronze gilt with red and green enamels, obverse centrepiece illustrating crossed fasces and sword with the inscription "AL MERITO" above, within an open ended wreath of laurel leaves, mounted to a green cross base with seven gilt rays between each arm, reverse centrepiece with the conjoined letters "GC" (Guardia Civil),
